Upper Layer Analysis and Troubleshooting Workshop for 1xEV-DO
Length:
32 hours (4 days)

Prerequisites:

Detailed understanding of cdma2000 1xEV-DO Rev A Overview or equivalent knowledge.
1xEV-DO Troubleshooting and Performance Optimization Workshop

Audience:

This hands-on workshop is designed for the experienced telecommunications professional involved in network deployments, field data collection, handset testing, and/or overall system performance engineering. This individual should desire understanding 1xEV-DO field related issues and the various methodologies used to identify and isolate 1xEV-DO related issues from upper layer related issues.

Course Description:

As packet data networks, such as 1xEV-DO Rev. A, are adopted by more consumers, application and content developers will utilize the larger bandwidths and lower latencies to provide unique ways in which consumers can use these networks. The breadth of new applications being developed for 1xEV-DO makes troubleshooting performance issues more challenging and complex. These applications create additional failure points, which further complicate isolation and resolution of an issue. The questions faced by many engineers are, “How do I know if the problem is a 1xEV-DO issue or something else?” or “How do I know it’s a handset issue, airlink issue, or network issue?”

This intensive hands-on workshop focuses on answering the questions above and explores troubleshooting methodologies and techniques for upper layer issues. The primary focus is to understand the various upper layer protocols that the majority of today’s applications use and how to identify and rectify performance issues related to these protocols. The workshop begins with an overview of the OSI model and the functionality of its various layers. This is followed by an in-depth look at RLP, its working behavior, and the interaction with 1xEV-DO that governs its performance. Next, PPP and the various protocols used to establish a PPP session will be explored, including how to troubleshoot and fix PPP failures. Mobile IP and Simple IP call flows, registration scenarios, and failure scenarios are discussed in detail, followed by an in-depth look at the functionality of IP and related 1xEV-DO performance issues.  Similarly, TCP, UDP, and ICMP protocols will be discussed in great detail, along with various application protocols such as HTTP, FTP, RTP, SIP, and DNS. Throughout the workshop, various troubleshooting techniques and methodologies will be demonstrated and tested regarding the performance impact of each protocol on 1xEV-DO.

This hands-on workshop makes extensive use of log files collected on live networks to illustrate the performance issues related to the upper layer protocols as well as demonstrating the analysis procedures using a variety of utilities (e.g., Wireshark/Ethereal, traceroute, Iperf, etc.)

Objectives:

After completion of this hands-on workshop, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the OSI model and its interaction with 1xEV-DO.
  • Explain how various protocols such as RLP, PPP, MIP and SIP, IP, TCP, UDP, ICMP, FTP, HTTP, RTP, RTSP, and RTCP can affect the performance in 1xEV-DO.
  • Define the behavior and functionality of these protocols.
  • Explain the in-depth concepts of these protocols.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting techniques to pinpoint performance issues by looking at upper layer protocols.
  • Explore different issue scenarios and relate them to the higher layer protocols and their behavior.

Media:

A combination of instructor lecture, student books, and hands-on troubleshooting and analysis using field data and logs.
